Choose the finish under the intended lighting
A mirror finish reflects its surroundings and makes surface details and reflections part of the experience. A brushed finish has a directional texture; agree its direction and appearance at welds. A coated finish introduces a separate color and maintenance specification. Ask to review the proposed surface sample rather than relying on screen colors.
Treat coastal and poolside exposure as design inputs
Salt, splash and sheltered surfaces influence the material and maintenance specification. Tell ToJa about marine exposure, pool water, irrigation and nearby industrial activity before the material is agreed. Grade selection, surface condition, fabrication details and drainage work together. A polished surface should not be described as maintenance-free or universally corrosion-proof.
Include cleaning access in the design
A tall or intricate sculpture can be difficult to clean after installation. Discuss access to recessed surfaces and how water drains from the form. The property team should know which areas need attention and which products are compatible with the actual finish. Cleaning responsibilities belong in the handover discussion, not only after staining appears.
Use a finish-specific maintenance routine
For uncoated stainless steel, a gentle wash with mild detergent, a soft cloth and clean-water rinsing is a common starting point. Follow the agreed finish-specific care instructions, especially for coatings. Avoid steel wool and unapproved abrasive or chemical cleaners. Cleaning frequency depends on exposure; persistent staining should be assessed before aggressive treatment.
Record the agreed surface specification
Keep the material designation, approved sample, finish description and care instructions with the project records. At the finish review, check the consistency of visible surfaces and the treatment of joins against the agreed sample. Technical background on coastal stainless steel maintenance is available from the Australian Stainless Steel Development Association (ASSDA).
